How to Perform Istikhara
It is important for Muslims to know how to Perform Istikhara before actually performing it. Remember, Istikhara can be performed every day and even in the daytime, except after Fajr and Asr, it is forbidden. Istikhara can be performed any kind of life’s decisions, rather big or small, for seeking the guidance of Allah.
The description of Istikhara Prayers was reported by Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah al-Salami (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to teach his companions to make Istikhara in all things, just as he used to teach them surahs from the Quran. He said: “If any one of you is concerned about a decision he/she has to make, then pray two rak’ahs of non-obligatory prayer, then say Istikhara Dua.”
How to Perform Salatul Istikhara
How to perform salatul istikhara is an important question. Istikhara Prayer is a powerful tool that Allah has given us to request His advice in all matters. It’s important to perform Istikhara Prayer wholeheartedly, knowing in our hearts that only Allah can knows what is best for us even if it conflict with our own wish.
Before going to bed pray two rak’ahs of non-obligatory prayer and then recite the Istikhara Dua. After that he/she go straight to bed and sleep with his/her face toward qiblah. Inshah Allah he/she will see a sign in his/her dream regarding their purpose of doing Istikhara Prayer.
Remember the following few points in order to perform Istikhara:
- We perform Istikhara dua with complete faith, not begging or pleading, but asking Allah clearly for his supervision and we should not be hasty after our dua.
- We do not put Allah swt on a timetable and we should not wait for a miracle or a dream full of signs. We simply say our prayers and trust that Allah has heard us and will answer us in the way that is best.
- Sometimes it takes only once to get the answer and sometimes it takes longer. It is recommended to carry out Istikhara Prayer seven times.
